Join us on 25 November for our first European Branch Meeting to be hosted in Portugal on Investing in Africa: The Role of Europe in Business Growth Opportunities.
The discussion will examine investment into Africa, exemplified by trade in Mozambique. Panellists will also explore the current fiscal context and the role of Portugal in supporting companies trading within Africa; using the context of the Renewable Energy Sector by way of example.
Panellists will include: Bruno Santiago and Fabrícia Henriques of Morais Leitao, Galvao Teles, Soares da Silva (MLGTS); Nuno Teixeira of the International Business Centre of Madeira (IBCM); Antonio Alves, General Counsel at Portucel Soporcel Group; and Miguel Matias, Chief Executive of Self Energy Ltd, a company with experience of the Renewable Energy Market in Mozambique. The Branch Meeting will be moderated by Roy Saunders, Chairman and Founder of The IBSA.

Nuno Teixeira joined SDM - Sociedade de Desenvolvimento da Madeira, S.A. - in 1999 and is currently Senior Manager in the Commercial and Marketing Department.
S.D.M. is responsible, on behalf of the Regional Government of Madeira, for the management, administration and promotion of the International Business Centre of Madeira (IBC), a programme of regional development consisting of an attractive tax regime, granted with the objective of attracting inward investment into Madeira to modernize, diversify and internationalize the island’s economy.
Education: Degree in Business and Administration by Universidade da Beira Interior (1999) having post-graduated in Marketing by Universidade Católica Portuguesa (Programa Avançado de Marketing para Executivos, UCP, 2000). MBA graduate by Universidade Autónoma de Lisboa (Gestão de Negócios Internacionais, 2012).
Antonio Alves began his career with José Alves Pereira e Associados. He was appointed as Head of Legal at Jerónimo Martins, Portugal’s largest retailer, in 1999 and is now with the Portucel Soporcel Group he is General Counsel. Antonio is a past winner of Iberian Lawyer’s 40 under Forty Awards.
Fabrícia is a member of the Mozambique and Portuguese Bar Associations, with experience advising clients on corporate, commercial and energy law in these jurisdictions. She is a partner at Henriques, Rocha e Associados which was founded in 2012 by a group of renowned Mozambique lawyers. The firm is a member of MLGTS Legal Circle.
Fabricia began her career at Morais Leitão, Galvão Teles, Soares da Silva, collaborating on several privatisations of Portuguese companies as well as financial transactions projects. More recently, her activity is primarily focused on M&A operations, mainly in the energy sector.
Fabrícia was a Lecturer at the Law Faculty of the University of Lisbon from 2000 to 2011. Currently, she lectures at the Eduardo Mondlane University and the Superior Institute of Science and Technology of Mozambique in Maputo.
Education
Law Degree (Law Faculty of the University of Lisbon, 1997). Postgraduate Studies in Internet and Intellectual Property Law (Law Faculty of the University of Lisbon, 2001). Master's Degree in Civil Law (Law Faculty of the University of Lisbon, 2007).
Bruno Santiago is a partner at MLGTS, specialising in international and Portuguese Tax on both consulting and dispute resolution issues.
He coordinates specialist teams that advise clients on cross-border transactions and transfer pricing, levered on his knowledge of Angolan and Mozambican taxation after his experience and collaboration with the Africa Team - an internal structure that guarantees permanent cooperation between member firms of the MLGTS Legal Circle and personalised support for clients within those jurisdictions.
He also has a strong practice in tax dispute and arbitration covering income tax, VAT, property tax & stamp duty on financial transactions, administrative, judicial and penalty proceedings.
Bruno represents clients from various sectors – financial services, oil and gas, energy, real estate & construction, media & advertising, pharmaceuticals, alongside private clients.
Miguel Matias is Chief Executive and Co-Founder of Self Energy Ltd. Self Energy is an independent, multi-national ESCo (Energy Services Company) with expertise in delivering energy efficiency and decentralised energy systems. As a technology-neutral ESCo, Self Energy utilises industry-leading technologies to maximise energy savings in line with client aspirations. All technologies are integrated seamlessly with one another and into existing building infrastructure. For a project that requires external investment, Self Energy provides unique access to project finance structures. Self Energy works with third party funders to tailor the right finance provision. As well as its UK experience, Self Energy has amassed a diverse portfolio of energy-efficiency and renewable energy projects across Europe and Africa.
Miguel led an investment in renewable energy infrastructure in Mozambique, leading the Self Energy Group in partnership with Visabeira, one of the most important local business groups to develop energy efficiency through rural electrification and mini-hydro plants. The company developed several projects, with significant funding for Mozambique from Public and Private Institutions to fund the projects, such as a $5 million project for solar villages in remote areas or a $30 million mini-hydro plant development. Miguel lived in Mozambique and has sound relationships with local industry and the public sector, alongside international development agencies.
